Secondary peritonitis is a serious abdominal infection, usually caused by organ perforations. Surgical treatment involves source control, peritoneal lavage and abdominal closure. This paper reviews best practices and innovations in lavage and closure protocols, with the aim of improving treatment efficacy and reducing complications such as abdominal compartment syndrome and recurrent infections. The methodology is a literature review that evaluates current techniques, such as the use of saline or antimicrobial solutions and temporary closures in critical cases. Personalization of treatment and evidence-based protocols are key to improving results.
