Introduction: Genital herpes is a chronic viral infection caused by Herpes Simplex Virus type 1 (HSV-1) or type 2 (HSV-2). Objective: To review current approaches and explore future perspectives in the diagnosis and treatment of genital herpes. Methodology: This is an integrative literature review. For data collection, the PubMed database was consulted and the descriptors "Genital Herpes", "Diagnosis", "Treatment" were used, combined with the Boolean operator "AND". Conclusion: Genital herpes remains a significant challenge due to the lack of a definitive cure and the chronic impact on quality of life. Although advances in diagnosis and treatment with antivirals have improved the management of the infection, new therapeutic approaches, such as vaccines and antibody therapies, hold promise.
