Introduction: Plastic surgery is vital in treating complex wounds, addressing challenges that
directly impact patients’ quality of life. With advancements in techniques like reconstructive
microsurgery and the use of grafts and flaps, the specialty enhances not only healing but also
aesthetic and functional outcomes. Interdisciplinarity and emerging technologies, such as
nanotechnology and tissue engineering, are redefining success in wound treatment, promoting
more comprehensive recovery. Objective: Assessing the Role of Plastic Surgery in the
Treatment of Complex Wounds and Its Effects on Clinical Outcomes. Methods: A systematic
literature review was conducted using PubMed and Scopus databases, filtering for studies
published within the last 6 years and of high methodological quality in English. Results and
Discussion: Seven articles were selected for inclusion in this study. Plastic surgery has emerged
as a critical intervention in the treatment of complex wounds, playing a vital role in improving
clinical outcomes and patients’ quality of life. Various advanced techniques, such as grafts, flaps,
and emerging technologies like 3D printing and cell therapies, have proven effective in
controlling complications and promoting tissue regeneration.Recent studies support the
superiority of plastic surgery approaches in scenarios where traditional methods fall short.
Conclusion: Plastic surgery is essential in treating complex wounds, employing advanced
techniques that enhance healing and functional and aesthetic outcomes. Innovations like
bioengineering and emerging technologies expand therapeutic possibilities, highlighting the need
for standardized guidelines to optimize these benefits. Plastic surgery redefines success in wound
treatment by focusing on healing and functional and aesthetic restoration.
